The winners in Saturday's VFL action were Richmond, Port Melbourne, Box Hill Hawks, Northern Blues, Footscray and Casey Demons.
Port Melbourne, Box Hill and Richmond remain undefeated after two rounds, while Northern, Footscray and Casey notched their first wins of 2017.

In an extraordinary start to the game at Box Hill City Oval, the Hawks opened with the first 12 goals – 11 of those in the first quarter. To the Lions’ credit, they hit the scoreboard strongly in the second term with six majors of their own but the damage had been done. Box Hill's talls proved the difference - Jack Fitzpatrick kicking five goals and Tyrone Vickery three.

Harry McKay started the game strongly with three first-term goals to give Northern the early lead at Preston City Oval but Williamstown hit the front midway through the second term. Kristian Jaksch gave the Blues back the lead before half time though and they were never headed. A six-goal third term helped Northern to its first win against Williamstown since Round 1, 2014.

Port Melbourne started strongly at Simonds Stadium, kicking the first five goals of the game to set up an early lead. The visitors won every quarter against Geelong and had 10 individual goalkickers to stay undefeated after the first two rounds.

Trailing by five points early in the second quarter at Trevor Barker Oval, Richmond kicked four unanswered goals - two either side of half time – to jump out to a 20-point lead. Sandringham got within seven points in the third term, but the Tigers had the answers and were able to defend their lead in the second half.

The reigning premiers are on the board in 2017 after running away from Werribee in a VU Whitten Oval twilight game. Fergus Greene was instrumental in the match-defining first half, booting three goals (five for the game) to help put Footscray up by 28 points at the main break. The Tigers won the third quarter but were out-gunned again in the final stanza.

The Demons brought up their first win of 2017 in slippery conditions at Casey Fields against a much-improved North Ballarat outfit. The Roosters rebounded from their humbling defeat at the hands of Richmond to have more scoring shots than Casey in the opening quarter, but last year’s grand finalists answered with a six-goal-to-two second term to set up victory.
