It is far too early to tell the success or otherwise of the new ten team competition but the opening senior round of the 2017 season was a great success so the first omens are very encouraging.
The weather gods smiled on the league until the heavens opened late in the afternoon but during the day most clubs reported good crowds and promisingly five terrific games of football. In fact at three quarter time four of the matches were in the balance – ironically it was the so called match of the day between the Nilma Darnum and Warragul Industrials had the largest margin differential.
All clubs unveiled some good recruits, showed plenty of ticker and it appears there will be no easy pickings for the top teams this year. The league is only as strong as its weakest links and last season’s three bottom sides Lang Lang, Ellinbank and Poowong all look superior outfits. We all know footy clubs are part of the very fabric of the community and interest is predicated on competition. These points are mutually inclusive. The upcoming months will tell the story of the health of the new competition however if all teams put on a show like that in the first round the interest and crowds will come and the league will prosper. Can’t wait for round two to start this Saturday 22 April!
