An extended Round 1 of the 2017 Peter Jackson VFL season concluded on Easter Monday with Williamstown defeating last year’s Grand Finalists the Casey Demons by 23 points.
Previously in Round 1, Port Melbourne defeated the Northern Blues two weekends ago and the Box Hill Hawks knocked off reigning premier Footscray on Good Friday, while Sandringham and Collingwood registered their first wins on Saturday and Richmond and Geelong did so yesterday.
WILLIAMSTOWN 12.11 (83) d CASEY DEMONS 8.12 (60)
The Seagulls broke open a high-quality arm-wrestle at Burbank Oval by kicking the only four goals of the third quarter to create a match-defining 31-point lead at the final change. Returning Williamstown premiership player Adam Marcon hit the scoreboard in the opening stanza while Ben Cavarra – debuting for the club alongside three former Frankston teammates – also booted a goal in an ominous sign of the club’s depth of talent.
Leading goalkickers: Currie 2, Gibbons 2, Masters 2 (Williamstown) / Scott 4 (Casey Demons)
