SWAFL Junior Development Officer, Jason King and SWAFL President, Jemma Still, met with the AFL in early April to piece together a proposal for a grant to help bridge the gap between the current Auskick program and the senior league.
With the help of Chris Mintern (AFL Club Development Officer), the league proposed a weekend carnival for girls in the second half of the year, to be followed up by a trial youth competition in three different Sydney regions.
The league received confirmation this morning that the grant for $5000 has been allocated, which is exciting news and just reward for the effot that Jason has put in to make junior development a focus of both SWAFL and the AFL.
The layout of the weekend carnival is still being finalised - with the plans at this stage to have a skills clinic and then a round robin competition as part of the format. Thoughts at this stage are to hold it on the weekend before the 2008 Grand Final, and then encourage all youth participants to come along to the showcase event of women's footy to see what it's like to play in the "big league".
SWAFL will be working with the AFL to put on this event, and will be looking for volunteers to assist with the skills clinic, administration and marketing. Please contact the league at sydneywomensafl@gmail.com if you are interested in helping with the program.
