Two-time Morwell premiership coach Harmit Singh has been appointed coach of TRFM Gippsland League’s senior interleague team. Singh, who masterminded the Tigers’ back-to-back flags in 2013-14, has coached Northcote Park for the past two years, before taking charge of Vermont this season, in addition to his role as an assistant coach of Collingwood’s inaugural AFL Women’s team.
The appointment marks the 30-year-old’s second stint as interleague coach, having led the 2014 Worksafe AFL Victoria Country Championships campaign, which ended in a 34-point loss away to Bendigo Football Netball League at Queen Elizabeth Oval. TRFM Gippsland League missed a golden opportunity for revenge when it hosted Bendigo at Warragul last year, but fell short and will now meet old foe AFL Yarra Ranges for the third time in five years – this time away from home. Singh was awarded the AFL Victoria Country Medal when the Gippsland League met Yarra Ranges – then Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League – in 2013 and said he was looking forward to giving others an opportunity to shine on the big stage. "I loved the concept as a player and as a coach I really enjoyed it in 2014 and the opportunity to come back and work with a region that's really close to my heart was too good to say no to," Singh said.
"For those men and women that are in the country this is a terrific opportunity to play at a higher level and build some new friendships and develop more as athletes. “The league has a large catchment area and hopefully we can build something that all players and clubs support.”
Singh recently completed the level three coaching course and has already started reaching out to senior coaches throughout the league for ideas and support.
Collingwood AFLW assistant and Eastern Devils senior coach Brendan Major, Bairnsdale leader Shaun Mooney, Leongatha senior coach Beau Vernon have been appointed assistant coaches. The clash between TRFM Gippsland and AFL Yarra Ranges will take place on Saturday, 13 May, with the winner to rise to 12th on the Worksafe AFL Victoria Community Championships rankings.
