Six Victorian umpires will officiate in the inaugural NAB AFL Women’s Grand Final between Brisbane and Adelaide this Saturday (March 25) at Metricon Stadium.
Ben Cheever, Martin Rodger (field), Kyle Fisher, Lachlan Harty, Jesse Wilkie (boundary) and John Varker (goal) will all feature in the match, with fellow Victorian Michael Pell named as the emergency field umpire.
Across the season, 21 field, boundary and goal umpires from the AFL Victoria Umpire Development Squad have officiated in competition.
AFL Victoria Head Coach – Umpiring Cameron Nash said it is great reward and recognition for these umpires.
"It is a fantastic result for AFL Victoria umpiring to have six umpires officiating in the inaugural AFLW Grand Final,” Nash said.
“All umpires were on our Development Squad last season and this experience will further assist their development towards umpiring VFL football in the future.
"The feedback we received from the AFL on all our umpires involved in the AFLW season was very positive and encouraging."
AFL Director of Umpiring Peter Schwab congratulated all umpires who officiated in the inaugural AFL W competition, adding special mention to the field umpires selected for the season decider.
“Martin, Ben and Tom have had great seasons and fully deserve their selection in what is a historic moment in our game,” Schwab said.
“I also want to take this opportunity to thank all of the young men and women that did a great job officiating during the first AFLW season.”
The umpires won’t be the only Victorians featuring in the Grand Final, with Swisse VFL Women’s trio Kaitlyn Ashmore, Nicole Hildebrand (Melbourne Uni / Brisbane) and Sarah Perkins (Eastern Devils / Adelaide) also set to make history in the match as players.
