South Toowoomba claim Cardinal Cup
Last years minor premiers and grand-finalists, have claimed the Cardinal Cup in a tight race with the Toowoomba Tigers.
The two-day carnival held at Kratzke Oval in Highfields, hosted by South Toowoomba saw five teams go head to head and play each other once with the team a-top of the ladder at the conclusion of the carnival declared the winner.
Warwick Redback’s and AFL Darling Downs legend, Colin Pope has been the key driver in the pre-season tournaments existence and he is known as ‘the Cardinal’.
The Cardinal Cup, in it’s ninth year and previously dominated by Jimboomba AFC who had won the last four titles, their run came to an end. Under new senior men’s coach, Kale Ross the Toowoomba Tigers played a high stoppage, contested style footy which saw them sit on top of the ladder after day 1 after the Bombers went down to Goondiwindi on the opening day.
However, it was the Bombers who stood up on the second day and their quick, skilful brand of football saw them defeat the Jimboomba Redback’s and combined Warwick/Lockyer Valley outfit.
The last game of the day came down to Toowoomba V South Toowoomba and it was the Bombers who prevailed in the 2 x 20minute game of the Cardinal Cup. The men in red and black were too classy in their 6-goal victory over the Toowoomba Tigers.
South Toowoomba Co-Captain, Jeff Neumann claimed the carnivals MVP through a 3-2-1 voting system carried out by the Umpires.
