NPL TAS TEAM OF THE WEEK: ROUND 1

GK- Sheku Kamara (Kingborough)

He had reflexes like a cat in the Kingborough goal, making crucial saves throughout the game to keep City at bay. He covered his goal and 18 yard box so well that it took something spectacular to beat him and even then he almost plucked that one out of the top corner.

RB- Adam Gorrie (South Hobart)

Converted to full back at the back end of the 2016 season and he has not looked back since. Gorrie slotted seamlessly into the South Hobart team and was outstanding in defence on debut for his new team, not giving a quarter down his flank and looking to overlap wherever possible.

CB- Zachary Cross (Northern Rangers)

Played well above his age of 17 years with a composed display in central defence. In an open game he was often left with defenders running at him but dealt with all that came his way with aplomb and was a big part of the reason that Rangers went on to claim their first clean sheet since 2015.

CB- Odaine Demar (Clarence)

The Jamaican/Canadian centre half was imperious at the back for the Reds as they endured numerous attacking raids from Rangers, especially in the first half. His passing wasn’t quite on but he was utterly dominant in defence and put in a large number of crucial blocks for his side.

CB- Hugh Ludford-(South Hobart)

After having his 2016 season derailed it was great to see Ludford back in the fold for round 1 of this season and he didn’t miss a beat. Was a rock at the heart of the South Hobart defence and helped curtail the influence of the dangerous Sklenar and Cartwright combination up top.

LB- Jayden Hey (Hobart Zebras)

Yeah he didn’t play left back, but we’re setting the precedent for out of position fullbacks early on. Hey had a fine game as a full back, defending steadily and ensuring Devonport had little impact from out wide. Then he created the equaliser with a superb cross for Mckeown.

CM- Jesse Fulton (Northern Rangers)

Another one of the Rangers young brigade who looks like they will take a step up this season. The 19 year old Fulton was tidy in midfield, keeping things ticking over in the engine room with a strong passing game and he looks like he could form a very effective partnership with Harry Thannhauser for Rangers this year.

CM- Henry Andrews (Devonport)

Keeping with the theme of young players who jumped out in week 1, Andrews looked the most impressive of a team loaded with talented youngsters. Almost opened the scoring with a stunning strike from range and cut a composed figure in midfield all match, moving the ball about nicely. For a 17 year old on debut playing central midfield it was a notable first impression.

CAM- Dylan Williams (Launceston City)

City’s international import was everywhere, setting up plays in the attacking third and winning balls in his defensive third. He was a constant threat to Kingborough when he drove at them with the ball and could have possibly won his side a penalty in the 43rd minute of the match.

LF- Adam McKeown (Hobart Zebras)

One of the most consistent goal scorers in the league and he was up to his old tricks to pull Zebras out of the fire at Valley Road. Opened the scoring with a fine run and near post finish before bobbing up for a fine glancing header to secure a brace and a point for his side.

RF- Alex Walter (South Hobart)

Seems to have gained a yard of pace over the Summer, Walter was absolutely explosive against Olympia. He pounced on a Mearns error at the back and made them pay full price with a delightful looping header that capped off a strong opening game from Walter. After establishing himself in the first team last year, he could be one of the stars of the competition in 2017.

Manager: Ken Morton

The veteran manager masterminded the only win of round 1 and what a win it was, with his South Hobart side running out 3-0 winners over a fellow contender in Olympia. His decision to sub Castaneda for the experienced Loic Feral was a game changer and showed expert judgement.
