The odour of liniment is in the air in recent weeks as all clubs partake in the practice match circuit. As most fans of the EDFL would know 2017 will see the league field a 10 club competition - down from 15 last year with Bunyip, Cora Lynn, Garfield, Koo Wee Rup and Nar Nar Goon having left to join the new West Gippsland football netball competition.
Nonetheless the league and all clubs are very bullish about the competition this year. It is expected to produce one of the most even and exciting competitions since the late 90’s and early 2000’s.
Senior wise seven clubs have new coaches; Ben Wragg at Ellinbank (ex Narre Warren & Yarra Junction), at Longwarry Daniel Fry (ex Garfield & Pakenham), at Neerim South Allan Chandler (ex Nilma, Newborough and Churchill), at Lang Lang Clint Evans (Beaconsfield and former coach Tiger Coach) at Nyora Fia Too Too (former Saint premiership player), Josh O’Brien at Warragul Industrials (ex Nilma and Buln Buln) while Poowong have appointed Mick Hawken from Devon Meadows.
An update on club recruiting will follow in the upcoming week.
Junior wise the competition is looking good with most clubs reporting sufficient numbers. Lang Lang is unlikely to field a U/16 team and Nilma Darnum unlikely to field at U/18 level while Nyora have reported low numbers but hope to get at least one side up. The league is also taking a pro-active approach with the likelihood if required of a new overage and internal permit system to assist clubs that may be struggling with numbers. If you are interested playing junior football this season at any of our ten clubs or would like to know more about any club please contact league Manager - Secretary Ken Moore on 0457 099 113.
