This offseason has seen many changes in Women's football! Over the past few months we have seen the introduction of a national AFLW competition and, closer to home, the launch of the SANFL Statewide Women's competition.
The SAWFL itself has also undergone significant changes during this time.
Since moving under the banner of the Ch9AFL (SAAFL) 3 years ago, SAWFL and SAAFL clubs have been urged to support each other and operate as "one club". However, for any club to appreciate the validity of our ongoing encouragement for clubs to form “one club”, we too must represent one League. Subsequently, the Ch9AFL (SAAFL) determined that a complete re-brand was in order across the board.
As such, the SAAFL is foregoing its name, the SAWFL will be foregoing its, and we have arrived at what we believe to be the way forward. That is to say, in 2017 women’s and men’s football will be represented as one.
Welcome to the Adelaide Footy League.
Please note that whilst there is a strong focus on the future of our League and of women's football, the past is not being forgotten. The work of those who established the SAWFL competition is not being dismissed. The Dutschke will still be named the Dutschke and as we expand in divisions, other key elements of The League’s history will be retained. For example, divisional Best and Fairests or Goal kickers will be named in honour of The League’s founders, Life Members and significant contributors. Both Leagues will be represented on playing guernseys by an identifying symbol of its roots. The SAAFL “wreath” will be on men’s, and the SAWFL “state/kicker” on women’s guernseys, however the master logo will assume common positioning.
Remember, there’s more to it than the name change. Changes to Rules and Regulations to allow new participants a softer entry to the game are being implemented. Shorter matches, smaller balls and smaller team numbers are just a few of the changes to increase the experience of the players, especially in lower graded divisions.
We hope you appreciate that this is simply an extension of the change process. We will continue to protect the game in which many of you have contributed and hope your ongoing support will continue.
