The first Peter Jackson VFL player selected in the 2016 NAB AFL Draft debuted for his new club in week 3 of the JLT Community Series.
Former Footscray premiership forward Ben Long (pictured, right) stepped out for St Kilda at Ikon Park on Saturday after being taken by the Saints with pick no.25 in November’s draft. The 19-year-old played only 42 per cent game time but had an impact in the second half of his team’s 92-point win against Carlton with seven disposals, five contested possessions, seven tackles and a goal.
Long broke into the VFL Bulldogs’ eventual flag-winning squad late in the 2016 home-and-away season and booted 13 majors in seven games – including a memorable haul of six in a big preliminary final defeat of Collingwood.
Ex-Geelong VFL key defender Tom Stewart (pick no.40, AFL Draft)backed up a strong showing in week 1 of the JLT Community Series with another steady performance in Geelong’s six-point loss to Adelaide at Richmond Oval in South Australia on Sunday. The 23-year-old had 15 disposals and seven marks in 91 per cent game time after recording 16 disposals, eight marks and six tackles in 84 per cent game time during the Cats’ four-point loss to Hawthorn two weeks ago.
Former Coburg midfielder Robbie Fox (pick no.34, Rookie Draft) also made his second appearance of the pre-season series on Friday night, picking up nine disposals, seven contested possessions and three tackles in 70 per cent game time during Sydney’s 12-point victory over GWS in Blacktown. The 23-year-old had 16 disposals, eight contested possessions and kicked a goal in 69 per cent game time during Sydney’s two-point loss to North Melbourne in week 1.
