Inglewood shine in second-half showing to overpower Subiaco
Report by Paul J. Laverty
Three goals in six second-half minutes saw Inglewood record their first win of the season to leave Subiaco pointless in 2017.
Strikes by Alex Ishida-Livings on 50 minutes and Alex Salmon in the 55th and 56th secured the win to leave home coach Taki Nicolaidis delighted with his side.
“We didn’t play that bad in the first-half but we were sloppy at times in the back third,” he said.
“At half time the message was get in the box and have a shot and we did by playing two-touch football and moving and passing. The way we broke them down was very impressive.”
The first-half was mostly one-way traffic from the home team with Subiaco keeper Ryan Montgomery on his toes to keep out a Brian Woodall back-post header.
Woodall was causing havoc for the Subiaco rearguard with his pace and flair but United’s finishing was letting them down.
Ash Rosindale saw a shot cleared off the line after the keeper was left stranded when he came out to punch a Tim Robertson cross.
Moments later Rosindale was again left frustrated when he blasted over from 12 metres with the keeper floored after making a block.
In the second-period Inglewood put on their shooting boots and made the perfect start with Brian Farrell overlapping on the right-hand side, and his perfect cross picked out Ishida-Livings who side-footed home to give Inglewood the lead they craved.
Five minutes later it was two with Salmon latching onto a Robertson pass to slot home.
The in-form frontman piled on the misery for the visitors with his second-in-a-minute when he rode past a sea of legs to keep his feet and nudge the ball into the net.
Subiaco didn’t crumble though and kept their shape to shut out Inglewood for the remainder of the game and keep the scores respectable.
On 75 minutes substitute Jonas Dorling played a neat ball through the Inglewood defence which Rory Feely coolly despatched for a consolation goal, but it wasn’t enough to threaten Inglewood.
Subiaco player-boss Ian McMurray, who remained on the bench, took positives from the loss but is keeping his aspirations well-in-check for the season ahead.
“Not to finish bottom,” he replied when asked what the club’s aim was. “We’ve got a new team and we are trying to put a new style of football together and hopefully we can influence that.”
