The Brisbane Lions have completed what is being described as the most successful visit to the Darling Downs in the regions history. Over a 2 day period (21,22nd Feb) the Lions players travelled far and wide across the Downs visiting all regional based clubs for the first time in the codes history.
A remarkable 2,500+ participants were reached over the 2 days visits that resulted in over 30 individual clinics / community events being run.
Highlights of the 2 day AFL Australia Post Community Camp include the following
Homework Help (Hume Ridge Church Toowoomba) – Lions players Archie Smith and Sudan born Reuben William were fantastic in this session. With over 50 participants in attendance ranging in age from 4-16 the players first gave everyone in insight into their background and how they made their way through to be becoming professional athletes. After this the players helped the participants with their homework as do other volunteers each week and the session finished with a football clinic and giveaways. With approx. 40 patrons in attendance everyone left the event inspired by the way these 2 gentlemen have gone about reshaping the Lions business and football operation department and leadership qualities discussed.
X6 Super clinic / club sign on days – A big focus for the Darling Downs camp was the ability to be able to service all regional based Darling Downs clubs. With support from Lions players and AFLQ staff x2 players were sent to 6 different regional clubs and conducted super clinic / club sign on events at all locations. Approx. 250 participants attended these 6 separate clinics which will provide a great boost for these clubs leading into the 2017 season.
A huge thankyou goes out to all players involved. Your attitude and energy was outstanding and the region can’t wait to have you back again.
