Summer Sevens - Kick Off

21 February 2017
Media Release: Summer Sevens program in South Gippsland Kicks Off.

The social soccer program summer sevens is in full swing in Wonthaggi. The six week program provides current players across South Gippsland a chance to get ready for the winter season and it is also a great environment for those wanting to try a new sport before committing to a full season. With three weeks left you can still get involved.

It is a fun, social seven a-side kick around which is an initiative of Football Federation Victoria (FFV) and supported by the Gippsland Soccer League. Summer 7’s involves 7 players on each team on a modified, smaller pitch. The program is being run in Wonthaggi on Monday nights from 5.30pm until the 6th of March. Players must be between ages 10-15 years of age for girls and 13-15 years of age for boys. The cost is $5 per player per week.

GippSport Program Coordinator Gene Parini believes it’s a great way for new and current players to come together and play in an informal setting. “Different teams are put together each week so players are getting to play with different players from varied towns each week. We have girls and boys games running separately but will bring both together towards the end of the program.”

With a large emphasis on fun, fitness and social benefits that only a team sport can offer, it is suitable for players of any skill level. (FFV) Gippsland Development Officer Mark Cassar believes the program is a winner on many fronts, “The format is perfect for those wanting to give soccer a go for the first time and it also allows those with experience to hone their skills in a modified environment. It’s very exciting.”

The program will conclude in March intentionally timed to lead into the 2017 winter soccer season. “The league in South Gippsland is continually growing and initiatives like this allow more to get a taste of the world game.” Mark added.

GippSport are providing support through the VicHealth Regional Sport Program, as they are focusing on developing new opportunities to increase the number of people participating in sport with a particular focus on those currently inactive or who have low levels of physical activity. Program Coordinator Gene Parini believes the introduction of the Summer 7’s program is a fantastic initiative and is encouraging other sports to make contact to get the support to run similar programs.
