NEWS: Full Day Football Extravaganza at Myers Reserve on Sunday
THIS coming Sunday (February 19) will see the Geelong Rangers Soccer Club host a full day of grass roots and elite community football at its Myers Reserve complex in Bell Post Hill.
The all day event will complete a bumper weekend of football for the Geelong region with Saturday seeing the inaugural Geelong Girls’ Gala event at Lara, along with the first matches involving local sides (Deakin Ducks and Lara United) in the nationwide 2017 Westfield FFA Cup, as well as the first home game of the season for local NPL club North Geelong Warriors taking place.
Kicking off Sunday’s Football Extravaganza at Myers Reserve will be the juniors at 9am, with friendlies all morning between the Geelong Region Country Championships representative teams and a selection of Geelong Rangers Junior team against various teams from local NPL outfit North Geelong Warriors.
The pick of the matches will see the Rangers State League Two Reserves team take on the Warriors’ NPL Under 18's team on the main pitch at 11:20am, which is sure to be a ripper match.
Then it's the Ladies’ turn, with Geelong Galaxy Women's WNPL side taking on a Geelong United select team, drawn from players from Lara United’s State League One team, as well as players from various local GRFC Women’s teams.
It is hoped that this historic challenge match, which has been organised at the suggestion of locally based Victorian State Sports Minister John Eren, will become an annual affair. The match will kick off at 2pm.
This game will be the curtain raiser to the Geelong Community Cup Finals, with the Play-Off for 3rd and 4th place between Geelong Rangers and Bell Park at 4pm, while the Grand Final showdown between State League Two’s Corio and tournament debutant Golden Plains will take centre stage at 6pm.
