NEWS: Semi Final Showdown in Geelong Community Cup on Sunday
THIS Sunday sees Bell Park take on old rivals Corio in Semi Final One of the Geelong Community Soccer Cup on Sunday at Myers Reserve at 4pm, while hosting club Geelong Rangers will take on tournament debutantes Golden Plains in the other Semi Final showdown at 6pm.
Corio and Bell Park have not faced each other since last year's Cup Final when the All Whites prevailed to take the title as the hosting club.
It is sure to be a close contest on Sunday, with Corio finishing at the top of Group B, while Bell Park finished second behind the undefeated Rangers in Group A.
With Corio out for revenge after being beaten by Bell Park in the Grand Final last year, this is set to be a classic confrontation 'on the hill'.
COACH Stuart Begg will test the depth of his squad with a Saturday game at Sebastapol, followed by a showpiece Community Cup semi-final against Golden Plains at Myers Reserve on Sunday.
Begg will have a hard task deciding who will play in the semi-final with most players cleared from niggling injuries.
Rangers take on the Plains in the second match of the series, starting at 6pm, following the other semi between Bell Park and Corio at 4pm.
The Bannockburn side has been the surprise package of the series, looking organised, skilful and determined in its first crack at the oldest Cup competition In Victoria.
Begg has conceded that this will be the toughest test so far for a side that has stormed through the qualifiers unbeaten.
There will again be changes, with the luxury of some serious depth.
He is well aware that Rangers have started slowly in all games and then crushed the opposition in a second half blitz.
The Dark Blues are unlikely to be allowed that concession against the Plains, which are running on adrenalin with a touch of experience.
Rangers will have the edge in speed and the Bannockburn boys will be tested in any running contest.
They deserved to be in the semi-finals, but this is their big test. Rangers have cruised and will run the midfield but going into this contest they will start as clear favourites, which will mean nothing to the Underdogs, who have played beyond all expectations.
Be sure not to miss all the action!
