An initiative that was suggested by the locally based Victorian Sports Minister and avid football fan John Eren, the game will take place at 2pm on Sunday February 19 at the home of the Geelong angers Soccer Club in Bell Post Hill.
Lara United FC president Aaron Pettman is urging all the region’s clubs to get behind the team and support the continued development of the Women’s game in the region.
“We would love to have all clubs get on board and support the initiative. John (Eren) has requested this game to promote ladies football in our region and we are hoping this game will raise the profile of the sport,” said Pettman, whose club’s senior Women’s team participates in the FFV State One competition.
Lara has taken a leading role in administering the team, which will take the field under the name of “Geelong United”, and is hoping to field players from as many of the region’s clubs.
“The team will be instructed by experienced senior Women’s coach Tony Horrocks and will be supplied with a new playing kit sponsored by Legea and GOFC. Thank you to Asmir and Andy at Legea and Mike Chapman and Peter Bradley at GOFC for the sponsorship,” Pettman added.
“We were hard pressed to find a central location for training at short notice with Howard Glover not available but we were able to hold training on our ground in Lara so we can make a start.
“We are asking each club if they could send their top 2-3 players to be in the rep team, that would be a great start. No doubt we may have to track down other players for specific roles ourselves later down the track.
“There will most likely be a follow up session or two which we will leave up to the coaches to arrange with players,” Pettman said.
The first official training session for the Geelong United rep team will be this coming Tuesday at the Lara Recreation Reserve in Alkira Avenue, Lara. It will commence at 6:30pm and any interested players are asked to contact Tony Horrocks on 0401 337 851 or via email at: Tonypaulhorrocks@gmail.com
