Toowoomba will host a QAFL game for the first time since 2011 when the Western Magpies play Surfers Paradise. This game ties into the Darling Downs City vs. Country representative weekend.
While the venue for this match is TBC the format for the day will involve a mix of women’s and men’s senior DD representative games (City vs Country) as well as the reserves and seniors QAFL matches Western Magpies Vs Surfers Paradise.
The drawcard of linking the 2 events together is one that returning league president Heather Green is really excited about. “The opportunity to bring a high content football such as this QAFL game to the Downs is a great result for our league’, said Green. “With this is mind we thought it was a perfect opportunity to also showcase the tremendous talent we have on the Downs with our City vs Country challenge”.
The City / Country squads are selected with the best players from the x4 Toowoomba clubs (Coolaroo, Toowoomba Tigers, Souths and University) as well as Highfields representing City while the remaining x6 clubs represent Country (Chinchilla, Dalby, Lockyer, Goondiwindi, South Burnett, Warwick).
The last time this game was played was back in 2013 where Country belted City to the tune of 128 points at the home of the Saints (Lyle Vidler Oval). The women’s game will be first instalment for this format and will have similar selection criteria to the men.
Nominations are now open for all coaching and management positions for all teams. Anyone interested in a formal position will be required to email league admin Sandy Martin afldd@afl.com.au
