This weekend the best under 16 players from across country Qld will converge on Rockhampton for the Australia Post under 16 Country Championships at Stenlake Park
Teams from across country Qld including Cairns, Cape York, Townsville, Mackay, Capricornia, Bundaberg Wide Bay and Darling Downs will all be on display and competing to be this years champions. Players will also be looking to be selected in the Under 16 Qld Country Kookaburra side to compete at the State Championships in Brisbane early next month.
These championships are a major step in the AFL Queensland player pathway for these under 16 players and gives them a huge opportunity to progress along the pathway and ultimately make the Under 16 Qld side and get in the eye of AFL talent scouts. The Country Championships has been a breeding ground for AFL talent over past few years with players such as David Armiatge (ST Kilda), Gavin Urqhart (Kangaroos), Paul O'Shea (Western Bulldogs), Brad Howard (ST Kilda) and Courtney Dempsey (Essendon) all progressing from the country program to AFL clubs.
Focusing on our local stars the Capricornia Under 16 side is eagerly looking forward to the championships with the side being made up of a good mix of players from all the clubs across our region. Not only will our best under 16 players be on display but our local junior and senior umpires will be involved officiating the championships.
The Australia Post Under 16 Country Championships will run from 21 - 23 from 9am each day.
