Wynstan Stats Central: Stats that mattered in the Prelims

Wynstan Stats Central examines which stats influenced the results of last week’s Peter Jackson VFL Preliminary Finals.

CASEY SCORPIONS d WILLIAMSTOWN

Casey’s suffocating pressure restricted the Seagulls to their lowest score of the season (5.13) in a 42-point loss. The usual Scorpions ball-winners in the midfield were at it again, with Alex Neal-Bullen (31 disposals, 18 contested possessions), Clayton Oliver (24, 17) and Viv Michie (18 disposals) helping their team to a +31 advantage in the disposal count.

But what was perhaps most impressive about their performances were their tackle numbers of eight, 17 and 13 respectively, as Casey not only found more of the ball but also laid 108 tackles to Williamstown’s 98. Uncompromising VFL-listers James Munro (eight tackles) and Ed Morris (seven) joined in the pressure-fest, as did big forward Tim Smith (eight tackles to go with three goals) and ruckman Jake Spencer (seven tackles).

FOOTSCRAY d COLLINGWOOD

The Bulldogs dominated most statistical areas in their 119-point win, but perhaps most striking was the ease with which they scored once inside 50. Footscray booted 27.19 – the highest score of the VFL season – from 73 inside-50s, equating to a score on the board from 63 per cent of entries and a goal kicked from 37 per cent. On the other hand, Collingwood managed rates of 34 and 19 per cent respectively.

Footscray’s Ben Long typified this efficiency with six goals and two score assists from his 17 disposals, while no less than seven of his teammates booted multiple goals. Lukas Webb (three goals, one score assist), Declan Hamilton (2.3, four - pictured), Mitch Honeychurch (2.3, three), Jed Adcock (2.1, three) and Nick Jamieson (1.2, four) were others to join in the feast.
