VFL Saturday recap: Finals Week 3

Footscray has raced into the Peter Jackson VFL Legendairy Grand Final with a 119-point mauling of Collingwood in the Preliminary Final at North Port Oval.

A six-goal performance from Ben Long, in only his sixth game, was a highlight for the Bulldogs as they bundled the Magpies out of the finals, and booked a second Grand Final berth in three years.

Following on where it’s AFL team left on the night before, the Bulldogs’ quick ball movement out of the middle and rebound off half-back set up numerous forward options as they kicked their highest score against a current VFL club and the biggest score of 2016 by any team.

Footscray built on its lead at every change, by 20 at quarter time, 41 at half time, 61 at three quarter time before finishing with a massive 10-goal final term and a 119-point win.

The Bulldogs will await the winner of Sunday’s Preliminary final between minor premiers Casey Scorpions and reigning premiers Williamstown, in the 2016 Peter Jackson VFL Legendairy Grand Final on September 25, 3pm at Etihad Stadium.

Telling facts: A nine-goal unanswered run between the first and second terms helped set up the win for the Bulldogs, racing out to a 58-point lead. The Magpies fought back to cut the margin to 37 points early in the third term, but after that point in the game the Bulldogs dominated. Footscray emphatically booked its Grand Final berth kicking 16 of the last 19 goals of the game, including an amazing 10-goal final term.
