Swisse VFL Women's
Callum O’Connor looks at some of the leading contenders from each club in season 2016.
BIANCA JAKOBSSON (Cranbourne): The Cranbourne half forward has overcome a knee injury and become one of the impact players for the Eagles this year.
DAISY PEARCE (Darebin): The Darebin captain helps orchestrate her side’s midfield with her efficient disposal. Will her B&F streak of three in a row continue from the VWFL Premier Division and provide her with seven league titles?
KATIE BRENNAN (Darebin): Brennan kicked 76 goals in the home-and-away season despite pushing further up the ground. Her extraordinary athleticism, pace and strength made her a match-winner.
STEPH CHIOCCI (Diamond Creek): The Creekers captain excelled under pressure this year, leading by example with added responsibility due to key injuries in the team.
JAIMEE LAMBERT (Eastern Devils): A phenomenal ball-winner who only needs a split second to dispose accurately. Include 44 goals and you’ve got one of the best midfielders of 2016.
SARAH PERKINS (Eastern Devils): The Devils’ forward kicked 51 goals this season, with her strong contested marking and long, sharp-shooting boot making her the key cog up forward.
MADDIE BOYD (Geelong): The Geelong ruck impressed this season in the young Magpies line-up, always providing a contest in the middle.
MELISSA KUYS (Knox): In a difficult year for the Falcons, captain Kuys has been a consistent performer in the middle.
ELLIE BLACKBURN (Melbourne Uni): Renowned for her hard running and skills in close around the stoppages, her line-breaking disposals made her a key to the Uni midfield in 2016.
EMMA KEARNEY (Melbourne Uni): Part of Uni’s dominant midfield, Kearney has had a standout year working in tandem with Blackburn in the middle.
KATE GILLESPIE-JONES (Seaford): Capable of dominating in all positions, the athletic Gillespie-Jones was able to play ruck and on-ball for the Tigerrettes this season, showcasing her impressive skills.
BRIANNA DAVEY (St Kilda): Davey moved into the midfield this season, showing an ability to brush aside tackles and use her booming boot to push her side forward.
MOANA HOPE (St Kilda): Will a 104-goal season for the game’s best forward be enough to attract the eye of the umpires in 2016?
BREE WHITE (VU Western Spurs): The captain of the Spurs is another that has led by example this season, helping her side gain first use of the ball out of the middle.
