Telling facts: In typical fashion, Footscray steamed home at North Port Oval to deny Essendon successive preliminary-final appearances. The Bulldogs booted six goals to one in the final quarter – including three to X-factor forward Mitch Hannan – after trailing the Bombers by 18 points at the last change. Earlier, the Dogs kicked the first three majors of the game and went 16 points in front when Bailey Dale booted his third midway through the second term. Essendon responded with four unanswered goals either side of half time, a Sam Michael major to start the second half putting his team in front for the first time since the match’s opening minutes. But inaccuracy in front of goal plagued the Bombers in the third quarter, with a return of 4.7 not enough to hold off a surging Footscray when it mattered.
