Players to Watch
Mount Barker:
Maree Heading has been Barkers main avenue to goal during the finals series. Without spearhead Lauren Taylor at the helm, Barker were in danger of failing to convert in their qualifying final against the Roos. Heading stepped up and booted 2, following up with kicking Bakers only goal the following week against Lofty. Barker are famed for their ability to shut teams down, but they need to rack up some goals. Heading can’t do it all on her own, but if she can kick a couple, they’ll be half way to the GF.
Adelaide University
Mariah Jones showed last week she could be the swing players Uni need. She started down back and played a solid first half, before coach Locky Sandford threw her up to CHF to help stop the Roos rebounding the ball out of defence. Jones did a stellar job and was integral in keeping the ball in the area in the last few minutes of the match. If Sunday’s match is a close one, expect Jones to be right in the thick of it until the final siren.
The Match
Last time these two played it was a real arm wrestle. Barker restricted Adelaide Uni’s run and held them goalless for the match, winning by 4 points. Don’t expect much more to separate them this time, but do expect more goals to be kicked. Both are very well drilled team units, it would be difficult to stop either team by cutting out one or two players as someone else will pop up and fill the void. Expect Sunday to be a real battle of the coaches in which positioning will be absolutely vital. Who will take on Lofty in the Defib Shop Division 2 Grand Final? Barker go in as slight favourites but it is too close to call!
