Behavioural issues have surfaced again this year, not only at games but on social media, apparently a developing culture of unsocial activity. Distress is caused not only to the target but to unintended bystanders. Traditionally we have provided a wonderful outlet for winter sport, our football and netball is loved by the whole family, practically from birth, to the very senior years. It is sport yes, but also the social interactions that make our area a great place to be, are we now letting our guard down and allowing elements amongst us to spoil what we have?
Issues have arisen at every club this year, some have been handled well by club officials or bystanders who have had the proactivity to advise the person(s) concerned that their behaviour is not acceptable however there remains a strong undertone of problems within our League.
Sadly we are now at a point that clubs will need to consider formal solutions for the future, maybe appointment wardens at matches or formal club match day managers who preside over matches for their club at home and away, reporting on the day’s events. That will be decided in the off season.
For now we are seeking the cooperation of all patrons, players and non-players, that they observe common decency when at Mid West events. Those who abuse and/or incite think they are justified in what they do by whatever their motive is but they must understand that they are seen and judged by their actions, not their motives. Young children, family members and friends are influenced and offended by these people.
Anyone who hears or sees inappropriate behaviour is asked to report the incident to any club or league official for action to be taken. We have Member Protection Policy in place unanimously adopted by clubs, which provides a mechanism to deal with incidents.
All players, officials, supporters and visitors are asked to be courteous in their conduct, support your team but please do it with the awareness that everyone else is there to enjoy the day too!
