The AFL is pleased to announce that nominations for the inaugural AFL Women’s Draft are now open.
The AFL Women’s Draft will be held on Wednesday October 12 in Melbourne.
The Draft order will be decided by a lottery. The lottery will take place at the Essendon Women’s Grand Final Lunch on Thursday September 29.
The nomination form is available via http://womensdraft.afl.com.au and will be available until September 30, 2016.
Players will be asked to nominate which state they wish to play in. Teams will then select players who have nominated to be drafted within that state.
The Draft will be the next step in completing team lists that will complete in the inaugural national women’s league in early 2017.
AFL General Manager Game and Market Development Simon Lethlean said he expects hundreds of players to nominate.
“The Draft is an important step towards the new league,” he said.
“Once the Draft is complete there will be 200 new AFL players ready to play at the highest level.
‘It is an exciting prospect to see great athletes join AFL clubs and embark on preseason training. I wish everyone the best of luck.”
Marquee players and some Priority players have been announced over the past five weeks.
Teams are required to have 25 players on their list and can also nominate up to two additional rookies that are new to the game or haven’t been registered as a player prior to June 15 2016.
