Adelaide Uni Through to First Division 1 Prelim
Adelaide University have shown they are a premiership threat with an impressive 66-point win over Salisbury at University Oval on Saturday night.
Uni took control of the game early with more system going forward, despite Salisbury’s best efforts to maintain possession.
A strong mark by Uni’s Kristi Harvey and an accurate pass to Ruth Wallace lead to the first goal of the match.
The two players worked well up forward and established themselves as reliable avenues for goal to Adelaide University, and were well supported by Stacey Richardson who also featured prominently.
Despite Uni’s control over the ball, the Magpies still managed to push forward on several occasions, but struggled against the stronger, more experienced team’s defensive zone.
It wasn’t until the final minutes of the first term that the Magpies were able to score, with Kiarra Pring kicking the team’s first goal.
The second quarter showed a similar display of dominance by the Blacks, winning centre clearances and constantly attacking.
The Magpies continued to battle hard, with Hannah Pavlovich working hard in packs, while Sarah Allen rucked well and managed to push the ball forward with numerous attacks, rewarding the team’s efforts with a goal and having a hand in another.
Uni continued to capitalise on their use of the ball, scoring a total of five goals for the quarter with Ruth Wallace and Stacey Richardson still performing strongly.
The second half saw fast movement and attacking run by both teams, moving the ball quickly up and down the ground, however, Uni had more strength and were more polished in attack.
The Blacks continued to attack with quick movement through the corridor, opening up the forward line for plenty of goal opportunities.
Salisbury’s defence remained under intense pressure with Uni’s midfield controlling the play, but managed to break through on several occasions, and were rewarded with a goal of their own.
The final term saw the Blacks into attack again with their defensive zone working extremely well, keeping the ball in their forward line.
Increased defensive pressure and smarter use of the ball by Salisbury restricted the Blacks to scoring five points in what was the Magpies’ best quarter, despite only scoring a point themselves.
Adelaide Uni ran off comfortable winners, after an impressive display of strength and skill by the team as a whole.
Despite always being under pressure, Salisbury never gave up and continued to challenge the more experienced team throughout the game, showing a great deal of potential for future success.
Adelaide University are now set to take on West Adelaide in the preliminary final this Saturday at 6pm at City Mazda Stadium.
