Wynstan Stats Central: Stats that mattered in Finals Wk 1

Wynstan Stats Central examines which stats influenced the results of last week’s Peter Jackson VFL Legendairy Qualifying and Elimination Finals.

1st QUALIFYING FINAL
CASEY SCORPIONS d FOOTSCRAY

As they’ve done against many teams this year, the Scorpions won the ball in close (+33 contested possessions) and then controlled it (+114 disposals) in their 70-point win. The usual suspects were at it again for Casey, with Viv Michie (31 disposals, 13 contested possessions), Alex Neal-Bullen (30, 12) and Clayton Oliver (28, 14) all tough and prolific.

2nd QUALIFYING FINAL
COLLINGWOOD d WILLIAMSTOWN

It was all about pressure in Collingwood’s 46-point victory. The Magpies lost the contested possession count by 19 and clearances by seven to Williamstown’s strong midfield, but turned up the heat without the ball to record 30 more tackles and regularly force the Seagulls into error. Brent Macaffer and Ben Moloney led the way with 12 tackles each.

1st ELIMINATION FINAL
ESSENDON d GEELONG

Essendon’s dominance at stoppages was the key to its 22-point triumph. The Bombers racked up 47 more contested possessions and 30 more clearances than the Cats, with Aaron Heppell (21 contested possessions, 13 clearances) recording game-highs in each category. But it all started with Mark Jamar (53 hitouts), who imposed himself on the ruck battle with Padraig Lucey and Wylie Buzza.

2nd ELIMINATION FINAL
SANDRINGHAM d PORT MELBOURNE

Many key stats were close to even in Sandringham’s 45-point defeat of Port Melbourne, but the tackle count was the biggest and most important differential. The Zebras made the Borough look sluggish and error-ridden from the get-go, with Kade Answerth (11 tackles), Jack Sinclair (11) and Myke Cook (10) contributing to a +33 advantage in the tackle count.
