NEWS: Deakin and Rangers to contest Sunday’s GRFC Men’s Div 1 Grand Final
DEAKIN Ducks will go into Sunday’s GRFC Men’s Division One Grand Final against last season’s champions Geelong Rangers the overwhelming favourites, having not lost a single game all season.
Deakin’s showpiece squad is known as the Gold team and everything it has touched this season, it seems, has turned to gold. With 12 wins and only one draw in the regular season, the Ducks managed to win all five of their Pool A Finals’ matches in the second phase of the Men’s elite competition.
The Rangers, on the other hand, finished the regular season in 4th spot with eight wins, a draw and four losses. They hit top form at the right time, heading into the Play-off phase, and managed to secure four wins and only one loss.
Their only defeat came at the hands of Deakin on the 12th of August in a Friday night match under lights at Deakin’s Top Fields in Waurn Ponds. On the night, Christopher De Hoog, Kyle Schorback and an own goal were the goalscorers for Deakin, while Dale Harris scored Rangers’ consolation goal.
In that encounter, Rangers were missing focal central playmaker Scott Davison, who will be a key for Rangers’ hopes of capturing back-to-back Grand Final successes.
Deakin, on the other hand, will be looking to sharpshooter Harry Wooley, who has netted an incredible 33 goals in 20 matches for the Students this year.
On another note, the Rangers players will be hoping to make it a double celebration come Sunday night, with popular veteran defender Joao Ramos set to play his 300th game for the Dark Blues.
Sunday’s season decider kicks-off at the special twilight time of 5:30pm at the Shell Road Reserve, the home ground of the Surfside Waves. A massive crowd is expected to watch the game as it will be a standalone fixture, with all the other Grand Finals having been completed by that stage.
