TRFM Gippsland League’s women’s football team has sensationally secured back-to-back Victorian Women’s Football League premierships, with a hard-fought nine-point win in last Saturday’s grand final.
Gippsland Galaxy went into the division three decider as red-hot favourite after an undefeated season, but was made to work hard to overcome a competitive and organised Fitzroy outfit.
Strong wind to one end of the ground made life difficult for the Galaxy in the opening term and their opponents made the most of the advantage, kicking 2.3 (15) and keeping Gippsland scoreless.
Roles were reversed in the second quarter and the Galaxy piled on three goals from 12 scoring shots to lead by 12 points at the main change.
The trend continued in the second half, with Fitzroy taking a five-point lead to the three-quarter-time huddle, but Gippsland rose to the challenge in the final term to win 5.12 (42) to 4.9 (33).
For the second year in a row, Galaxy on-baller Sarah Jolly was awarded the best-on-ground medal for a starring performance.
Nicole Garner booted two goals and was joined in the best, by Brodi Pedretti, Rachel Drenen, Lisa Whittaker and Danni Pearce.
Drenen, Pedretti and Fiona Morrow were the other goal-kickers, with one each.
Congratulations to coach Nikki Schroeter and her support staff on their achievements and after successive premierships in division five and division three we look forward to seeing the Galaxy continue to progress in the years ahead.
