Magpies Triumph Over Hawks in Elimination Final
Salisbury has secured their place in the first semi-final after an 8-point win over Modbury at the Modbury Sports and Community Centre on Saturday night.
The two teams grappled hard from the first bounce with both sides struggling to clear the ball from the centre square.
Salisbury were the first to take clear possession, however, strong defensive pressure by Modbury lead to a turn over, and Modbury’s Nikki Thompson scoring the first goal of the game.
The Magpies continued to battle hard against the Hawks, and were rewarded with a goal of their own.
Modbury replied with strong teamwork and bought the ball back down to their end for a second goal of the quarter.
In the second term, despite strong attacks from the midfield, the Hawks struggled against Salisbury’s last line of defence, resulting in a number of missed goal opportunities.
The last half saw Salisbury gain control of the game, adding more system into attack to their already strong defensive game.
Salisbury’s Jess Allen got a lot of possessions playing a kick behind the play, and Nicole Mark played very well across half back, holding up many Modbury attacks.
Salisbury ran the ball down the field with system, and were rewarded with two goals during the third term while keeping Modbury scoreless.
In the last quarter, Modbury came out with renewed vigour, pushing hard into attack in a desperate attempt to regain the upper hand.
Their persistence was rewarded with a goal by Chloe Scheer, casting doubt on Salisbury’s ability to stand up against the determined Hawks.
Not to be denied, Salisbury maintained the pressure in defence and pushed the ball forward.
Paige Allen cleverly read the ball off the pack and kicked a good running goal, putting Salisbury back in the lead.
The Salisbury midfield controlled the play with Demi Sonneman lifting, gaining important possessions, and sending Salisbury into attack.
Her efforts were rewarded when she kicked a goal on the run from 30m out, putting the result beyond doubt and insuring a Salisbury victory.
Modbury tried valiantly to push forward, but Salisbury’s defence held firm and at the final siren Salisbury ran out worthy winners in what was a high standard, entertaining game.
Salisbury are now set to take on Adelaide University in the first semi-final in what should be an enthralling contest next Saturday.
