The Peter Jackson VFL Legendairy Finals Series fixture has now been released for Week 1.
The finals will begin on Saturday September 3, providing football fans with plenty of action across the AFL-free weekend.
The final ladder positions and match-ups were not decided until Round 21, with the race for the minor premiership, double chance and eighth position still alive entering the finale to the 2016 home and away season.
Footscray ended Collingwood’s 12 game winning streak, earning the Bulldogs a double chance for the third year in a row and allowed Casey Scorpions to claim the minor premiership after they defeated Box Hill Hawks. The Scorpions have secured their fifth top four finish to a season in the past seven years, claiming the minor premiership for the first time since 2012.
Essendon booked back-to-back VFL finals berths with a win over Northern Blues, denying an inform Richmond a spot in the finals - leaving the Tigers in ninth position, a game outside of the eight.
Geelong halted Port Melbourne’s hopes of displacing Footscray from fourth on the final day of the season, defeating the Borough at VU Whitten Oval, leaving Footscray in fourth, Geelong fifth and Port Melbourne in sixth. Borough coach Gary Ayres will enter his eighth finals’ campaign with Port Melbourne, from his nine years in the job.
Channel 7 will broadcast a Saturday and Sunday game throughout the VFL Legendairy Finals Series, starting with the cut-throat Elimination Finals live from North Port Oval.
In the AFL Victoria Development League, Williamstown secured the final spot in the finals after Port Melbourne – the Seagulls’ opponent next week in an Elimination Final – defeated Coburg and shaved 6% off the Lions’ percentage, seeing them drop below Williamstown on the ladder. In the Semi Final, Box Hill Hawks will face Casey Scorpions for a spot in the Grand Final on Saturday September 17.
