NEWS: Surfside Waves to stage special charity event in aid of Beyondblue

SURFSIDE Waves Soccer Club is organising a special Charity event at its Ocean Grove clubrooms in support of Beyondblue, an organisation which aims to make a difference in the lives of individuals, families and communities affected by depression, anxiety and suicide.

To be staged on Friday 2nd of September at the Shell Road Reserve clubrooms, the evening will commence at 6:30pm with a special soccer and fitness focussed Q & A session with legendary local retiring players, 77-year-old Everitt Nelson and Surfside’s own Cath Sattler, who is also the head organiser of the event.

Kicking off at 7pm, there will be a huge night of musical entertainment featuring popular local acts, The Von Robertsons, SKA Bang, Fenn Wilson and Sarah Carroll. There will be a silent auction running throughout the night, with meals and finger food available to be purchased, along with drinks at bar prices.

According to Sattler, who is nearing the end of her final season with the Surfside Waves Senior Women’s team, one of the main reasons why she is organising this event is because she herself has suffered from anxiety and depression for many years.

“I am a great believer in raising awareness and getting stories out there and removing the stigma attached to it,” explained Sattler, talking about an issue that is very close to her heart.

“Soccer and music for me have been massive outlets that have helped me cope with my anxiety over the years and as I retire I wanted to do something for a cause I really believe in. It made sense to bring the two things together soccer and music.

“At Surfside, everyone agrees this is an area where sports can really help people suffering and we want people out there to know that sport is a great outlet when things aren't going so well in the head,” added Sattler, who has been acting in the role of players’ Welfare Officer at new WNPL club Geelong Galaxy United.

“Many people have been touched by anxiety and depression and we would love the football community to come together and support this event which will be a great awareness raiser as well as a wonderful evening of entertainment.

“As part of the silent auction, I will be getting rid of my many replica soccer shirts and soccer mementos and as part of the Q and A with myself and Everett Nelson I would like to encourage people to ask me about my experience with depression and anxiety. It helps other sufferers so much when we all actually talk about it,” said Sattler.

Tickets for the event are just $20 and can be purchased by contacting Cath on 0434 488 008 or Kelly on 0405 707 670.

It's a family friendly event with family tickets available for purchase and includes two adults and two children for $50 or 1 adult and 1 child for just $25.

Tickets can also be purchased via the following website link (https://heroix.everydayhero.com.au/event/beyondbluebashsportingclubs/hero_page/cath/donate) as well as on game day at the Surfside Waves kiosk.
