Mail Medal – Jake Bruce
This is Jake’s third Mail Medal, also winning the award in 2012 and 2013, intersected with a hamstring injury that hampered him in 2014 and most of 2015. Also winning the 2016 Flow FM MVP award, which is as selected by clubs, his exceptional work has been noticed by everyone. Highly skilled, it doesn’t matter if it is wet/dry, windy, hot, cold, he excels in any conditions. A Prolific midfielder, Jake possesses a devastating long kick, hitting targets from 60m and carry the ball for distances also with wonderful leg speed. Very hard to match up on, and gets first attention of opposition taggers. Jake represented the League at Mortlock Shield and Eyre Peninsula at the State Country Championships, playing well at both. A big congratulations to Jake, who has stamped himself as one of the very high achievers of Country Football, and at 23, plenty top football look forward to as well. A very well deserved recognition.
Presidents Medal – Zac Fitzgerald and Mark Dolling
Two of the elite players of Mid West, both new to the league in 2016. Zac returning home to Central Eyre after a stint in Adelaide with Woodville-West Torrens and then in the Mid North with Brinkworth Spalding Redhill for a couple of years. Zac has played much of the time in the midfield resting forward, being unstoppable. Tall, fast and fit, he recently represented SA Country against WA Country. He possesses a long accurate kick and ability to avoid being tackled. Mark moved to Streaky Bay early in the year to set up a new business venture. A highly decorated player throughout his career, starting at Ramblers in Great Flinders, then Port Adelaide Magpies and a place getter in the Magarey Medal, then winning a Mail Medal at Paskerville FC in the Yorke Peninsula FL. A strongly built midfielder with a passion for the contest, wins the hardball and sets up runners around him. Regular goal kicker and ability to work through heavy traffic, breaking tackles along the way.
Joe Day Medal – Sam Buckham
Sam plays for Wudinna United, and represented Norwood Under 18s during the year, also the Eyre Peninsula under 17 side. 16 years old, he plays in the midfield for Wudinna United, with occasional key position jobs. Works hard all day and covers plenty of ground in an effort to lift his side. A true two sided player making him hard to tackle and elusive when he has the football. Sam won the Lockwood Medal in the Colts competition last year and also represented Mid West at the 2016 Mortlock Shield, captaining the Mid West Kinlough Cup side.
Montgomerie Medal – Jordan Stutley
Jordan is captain of the Central Eyre reserves and also was called upon to play A Grade during the year. Kicked 29 goals for the season, but is a true utility player, dominant in the midfield, dangerous up forward and a mean defender. He possesses a strong mark and brings team mates in to the game. Deceptively quick and great work ethic, a very well deserved award
Bob Whetstone Medal – Shaun Murphy and Ryan Cummings
Two of the speedsters of the reserves competition, Shaun a young centreline player with an A Grade future and Ryan Cummings a former high level A Grader in his later football years. Shaun possesses great leg speed and carries the ball well, enjoys winning the contested football and regularly sets up his forwards. Good disposal skills and just doesn’t stop. Ryan is a former A Grade premiership player with Wudinna United and still possesses his trademark ability to dodge and weave, just when you think that you’ve got him, he’s gone. Playing in the midfield for a lot of the year before a call back to the A Grade side where he again acquitted himself well
Lockwood Medal – Jay Johns
Captain of the West Coast Hawks and enjoyed another great year at the Hawks, not only in the Colts but as a regular A Grade player. Wins the ball from the middle and sets up his team mates, leading a strong Hawks outfit. Able to find the goals and works into defence quickly, he as another player very hard to match up on. A great build for football and very fit. A very well deserved Best and Fairest award.
Doug Fox Medal – Matthew Reeves
This is a great recognition to a player who has developed quickly in the past couple of years, Matt leads the ruck at Elliston, now being one of the taller players in the league. Needing to learn this recently, he has dominated the contests and also around the ground marking most that comes his way. Always ready to assist those around him, he also is dangerous when allowed to go forward, long kick and accurate. Played A Grade this year and will play much more next year.
Congratulations to all the Leagues Medallists for 2016
