The Bombers continue their 2016 journey, with a 47 points win over the Magpies at Wudinna Oval with Spring in the air. In the reserves, the Hawks progress to the preliminary final, continuing their outstanding current form with a 61 point victory, and the young Bulldogs placed themselves in the Preliminary Final with a strong second half, moving away to win by 65 points.
Wirrulla will be pleased with their win, hard earned, Wudinna United kept chipping away all game but couldn’t contain the multiple scoring avenues that the Bombers possess. The last three goals of the game were all the Bombers, so the game was always within sight of Maggies until very late. No doubt a weeks rest will be welcome by Bombers coach Troy Olsen, a chance to look at the top two and plot a strategy for one of them.
Excellent match by Ryan Watson, loves the big games and so often a high level contributor. Great work ethic and loves the contest. Big man Jarden Stoetzer led for the front, two handy goals and most of the time in the midfield. Simon Webb a key forward, four goals and ability to cover so much territory, Daniel Swaffer and Paul Haynes plenty of it. Cody Colbung dangerous, three goals but ability to dodge and weave to set up plenty also.
Wudinna United battled hard, maybe a couple of turnovers hurting, but they were in the match very late, assisted by some accurate goal kicking. Leading their best is Ian Jericho, a young key position player who is assigned big jobs every week, fantastic season from him, the veteran Zane Petty, always a stout defender and club at heart, loves the hard footy and mixes it with anybody, Remi North again around the centre, big second half of the year, Matthew Greatbatch on the ball and Thomas Dupree in the ruck worked well. Henry Zwar back from injury but maybe not at his peak powers and Ryan Du Bois, the grand old stager both very welcome ins to a young team learning their craft
The Bombers will look forward with anticipation, at their best they can challenge those above them, but they do need to be at their best!
West Coast Hawks continued their outstanding second half of the year in the reserves, accounting for the Magpies, having the match all but wrapped at half time with a 57 point lead, the match much closer from then on, but the damage already done. Perhaps the luxury of not having the A Grade to account for assisted the Hawks, Damien and Nathan Johnson, James Westley very handy ins, but likely to be in the A’s hereafter. Leading the Hawks best was Damien Johnson, a smooth mover and wonderful user of the football, James Westley in the ruck, Nathan Johnson, Hayden Brands and Isaac Galliver. Big Brent Bascombe dangerous all day with four goals. The Magpies bow out but do so with their heads up and fighting the match out all the way. Chris Foster leading the best, Nigel Oswald, Kym Tree and David Moyse all in the best.
West Coast Hawks go forward to the Preliminary Final with play either Central Eyre or Wirrulla. They will feel that they can go all the way in the Reserves, perhaps the form team in the competition presently.
Central Eyre pulled away from a plucky Wudinna United in the second half, after scores level at half time. The bigger bodies of the young ‘dogs maybe telling in the end. Entertaining game of colts football and two committed teams. Leading the Bulldog best is Corey Waters, outstanding young talent and played a lot of A Grade football this year, learning his trade from the best, Joe O Brien, Tom Rushmer, Chandler May and Harley McCormick all having great games. Chandler May leading the scoring with five goals. The Magpies again led by Jeb Nettle, big game every week and a leader, Ryan Lymn, Harry Scholz, Aaron Magay and Jack Petty all in the best.
The young Bulldogs also will look forward to the Preliminary Final, playing either of West Coast Hawks or Elliston. Highly skilled and a great team ethic will have their sights on the Grand Final.
