The door to the top 8 inched ever closer to being shut with Essendon winning against, and making the task more difficult for Richmond - the only remaining top 8 contender.

Telling facts: A six goal unanswered opening term helped set up an important win for Essendon. While the Roosters had just six less scoring shots, inaccuracy cost them with 16 behinds for the day –five in the opening stanza.

Telling facts: The winning streak has now stretched to 12 for the Magpies, as they kicked eight unanswered goals from early in the first term to early in the third. Box Hill Hawks are now out of mathematical chances, and will miss the VFL finals for the first time since 2008.
