There are all manner of stats that can be used to tell the story of a team’s season, but for Footscray and the Box Hill Hawks it’s the simple margins on the scoreboard that probably say the most, as Wynstan Stats Central examines.
The sixth-placed Bulldogs may have recorded four more wins than the ninth-placed Hawks in 2016, but their inferior percentage of 101.2 (compared to Box Hill’s 103.2) points to their remarkable ability to prevail in close contests.
Indeed, Footscray’s last eight games have been decided by two goals or less and the Bulldogs have won six of them – losing only to Coburg by 12 points in Round 13 and the Northern Blues by six points in Round 16. The Bulldogs have made a habit of never lying down, memorably coming from behind during the last quarter in clashes with Frankston, Richmond, the Casey Scorpions and two weeks ago against the Hawks.
On the other hand, Box Hill finds itself in an unfamiliar scrap for a finals spot after dropping seven of nine games decided by 16 points or less, including three consecutive heart-breakers against Essendon, Richmond and Footscray in Rounds 15-17 in which the Hawks held comfortable leads in the final term.
Sometimes the best measure of a team’s ability to ‘just get it done’ is the scoreboard.
Other key stats from Round 18:
15: Geelong’s VFL team shared the scoring love around in its big win against Frankston in Round 18. The Cats feasted on 23 goals for the game, which came from 15 individual goalkickers. Five players booted multiple majors – led by Timm House with four – while a further 10 chipped in with singles.
7: Victorian State Combine invitee Oscar McInerney played just his second senior VFL game for the Casey Scorpions – and first since April – in Round 18. The 203cm big man took over the no.1 ruck duties from Jake Spencer in the victory over Coburg and recorded 15 disposals, 27 hitouts, one goal and – perhaps most impressively for someone his size – seven tackles.
