Footscray upset the reigning premier in a thriller by four points and the Box Hill Hawks kept their finals hopes alive with a 37-point win against Werribee in Sunday’s Peter Jackson VFL action.
The Bulldogs denied Williamstown a sixth straight victory and top spot on the ladder for this week while moving themselves even on wins with fourth-placed Sandringham in sixth position.
The Hawks, meanwhile, leapfrogged the Tigers (both varieties) to be sitting one win outside the finals, and in the box seat to snatch Essendon’s eighth spot should the Bombers continue the poor form from their last two games.

Form: Box Hill Hawks – L L L L W / Werribee – L L W W L
Telling facts: Box Hill set up victory with a big third quarter at Box Hill City Oval. Leading goalkickers: Fitzpatrick 3, Burton 3, Webster 2 (Box Hill Hawks) / Hanson 2, Meredith 2 (Werribee)
FOOTSCRAY 12.9 (81) d WILLIAMSTOWN 11.11 (77)
Form: Footscray – W W L W W / Williamstown – W W W W L
Telling facts: The Bulldogs claimed a thrilling victory at Burbank Oval thanks to an Andrew Tashevski-Beckwith goal with just minutes remaining in the game. The Seagulls had hit the lead for the first time since the opening quarter shortly beforehand, but couldn’t turn their 15-point half-time deficit into triumph. Footscray’s last eight games have now been decided by two goals or less, with six of those results being wins.
Leading goalkickers: Hannan 4, Hoghton 2 (Footscray) / Masters 2, Conway 2, Gibbons 2 (Williamstown)
