Frankston has won just two of 14 games this year, but the signs of improvement from a winless 2015 season are in the numbers, as Wynstan Stats Central examines.
The Dolphins hadn’t won in 24 games before memorably upsetting Richmond by 13 points in Round 3. They added a second victory two weeks later against Coburg and led the likes of Williamstown and Footscray at three-quarter time before falling short in the final term. It was the same story of competitiveness against the Tigers in Round 17 – ahead by 19 points at the last change only to lose by 31.
What’s changed? Well, the Dolphins are finding much more of the ball and holding onto it better than in 2015. They average 38 more disposals and 35 more uncontested possessions per game, and have shown greater intent to move the ball quickly via hand than foot (kick-to-handball ratio of 1.2 in 2016; 1.4 in 2015). This has been an important shift for the league’s worst clanger-kick team in both years.
While the numbers around the contests (contested possessions, clearances, tackles) and inside-50 entries per game have essentially stayed the same, Frankston’s greater ball control has led to them kicking seven more and conceding 26 fewer points per game than last year.
Stringing together full four-quarter performances is the next step for senior coach Patrick Hill’s group to take.
Other key stats from Round 17:
13: The North Ballarat Roosters had 18 fewer scoring shots in their 13-point loss to Port Melbourne in Round 17 but remarkably kicked one more goal than the Borough. James Keeble has a lot to answer for, recording North Ballarat’s only behind in an accurate scoreline of 13.1 (79). Port Melbourne unfortunately lived up to its ranking of 14th in the league for scoring accuracy by posting 12.20 (92).
44: Tom Gribble had the ball on a string in Werribee’s victory over the Northern Blues in Round 17. The 21-year-old continued an exceptional return to VFL football after his 2015 season was wiped out by injury by having a round-high 44 disposals – 14 more than anyone else on the ground.
