Sixteen of Australia's best women Australian rules football players have been announced as the first players of next year’s inaugural women's AFL competition.
The announcements were made during five different press conferences which took place simultaneously across Australia yesterday.
The women will be paid $25,000 for the eight-week season taking place over February-March next year, with added relocation costs for those moving interstate to participate in one of the eight teams.
The eight clubs participating in the new women’s competition include Adelaide, Brisbane, Carlton, Collingwood, Fremantle, Greater Western Sydney, Melbourne, and Western Bulldogs.
Due to the rich talent pool in the state and only one team in the competition, six Western Australian players will be relocated to become the new faces of Adelaide, Greater Western Sydney and Brisbane.
The placement of these marquee players is hoped to reduce the likelihood of a skewed competition, with there being significantly more development in Western Australia and Victoria, than states such as New South Wales and South Australia.
The marquee players are as follows.
Adelaide: Chelsea Randall and Kellie Gibson
Brisbane Lions: Tayla Harris and Sabrina Frederick-Traub
Carlton: Brianna Davey and Darcy Vescio
Collingwood: Moana Hope and Emma King
Fremantle: Kara Donnellan and Kiara Bowers
Greater Western Sydney: Renee Forth and Emma Swanson
Melbourne: Daisy Pearce and Mel Hickey
Western Bulldogs: Katie Brennan and Ellie Blackburn
