The AFL dream has become a reality today for seven Swisse VFL Women’s players, with the announcement of the marquee players in the inaugural AFL national women’s league.
Ladder-leaders Darebin boast the most players named today with four, seeing Daisy Pearce and Melissa Hickey retained by their AFL Women’s Exhibition series club Melbourne. Darcy Vescio has changed club allegiances and will line up with Carlton, while key forward Katie Brennan has been retained at the Western Bulldogs, pairing with Melbourne Uni midfielder Ellie Blackburn.
St Kilda Sharks key midfielder and former Bulldog no.1 draft pick Brianna Davey will join Vescio at the Blues, while Davey’s Sharks teammate and competition leading goalkicker with 77-goals, Moana Hope, has become a Magpie, named as a Collingwood marquee player along with WA recruit Emma King.
Details of the national women’s league draft are still to be announced, with a date to be revealed in mid October, with plenty more opportunities for VFL Women’s players to join the AFL in 2017 on offer.
Focus over the last week has turned to coaching announcements, with Eastern Devils coach Brendan Major this week named as an assistant coach to Wayne Siekman at Collingwood. More announcements will follow.
