Season 2 of Foxtel’s ‘The Recruit’ starts tonight (Wednesday July 20) at 8.30pm on Fox8, with seven current Peter Jackson VFL players competing for a guaranteed spot on an AFL list in 2017 as a Category B rookie.
Essendon’s Justin Van Unen, Frankston pair Jackson Sketcher and Jordan Treloar, North Ballarat’s Daniel Cox and Matthew Eagles, and Port Melbourne duo Fabian Brancatisano and Jason Williams are among the show’s 15 contestants.
The group will live and play together over 10 weeks under the tutelage of a panel led by former AFL premiership coach Mick Malthouse, before the winner is named live on air in October.
Van Unen, 25, is a goalkicker who recently joined the VFL Bombers and booted three goals in his first match – a win against Frankston two weeks ago.
Sketcher, 24, and Treloar, 23, have played in seven and four games respectively for the Dolphins in 2016. Sketcher – who tied with Essendon star Dyson Heppell for the 2010 Morrish Medal in the TAC Cup – is a ball-winner who has been named in Frankston’s best six times this season, while Treloar is a 194cm forward.
Cox, 21, is a WA native who has played seven games for the Roosters this year as a mid-forward and Eagles, 26, is a tall forward/ruckman who has complemented the work of North Ballarat big men Orren Stephenson and Rowan Marshall over eight games in 2016.
Brancatisano, 22, is an outside midfielder who has played two games at Development League level at the Borough this season, while Williams, 22, has played one senior match and six in the Development League for Port Melbourne as a utility.
‘The Recruit’ can be seen on Wednesdays from 8.30pm or on Fox Footy after ‘AFL Tonight’ on Sunday nights.
