AFL Sydney is pleased to announce that the 2016 Round 14 Rising Star is Josh Boag from the Pennant Hills Demons.
Eighteen year old Josh Boag made his Premier Division debut in Round 9 this season against Sydney University in an energy-sapping contest played in torrential rain. Although it was a difficult game to exhibit his skills, Josh was tenacious in his attack on the ‘slippery pill’ and earned his team-mates respect for his perseverance and resilience.
Josh is a country boy, originally from Coleambally in the Riverina, where he played rugby league before converting to Australian Rules Football. He has played regional reps in both codes as a junior. He came to Sydney in 2015 in search of work and joined Pennant Hills AFC, playing a full season in the Under 19s last year.
Josh is a good size and has great mobility. He has an impressive jump and sure hands and his hardness at the ball and his opponents is inspiring. Since debuting in Round 9, he has played in five consecutive matches in Premier Division. In the past two games he has been called upon to play second-change ruckman for the Demons and has proven that he can match it with the opposition talls. In last week’s clinch match against UTS Bats he proved his worth to the team in the ruck and kicked a critical goal at a crucial time.
Chris Yard, coach of Pennant Hills Premier Division, has been impressed with Josh’s quality football skills, his physicality and endurance. He is a physical player who is able to take a hit and move on. These qualities were all on display in last weekend’s match against the highly-rated UTS Bats, Josh proving that he has the talent and drive to perform at the highest level in Sydney AFL.
A football future with great potential is in prospect. Congratulations Josh!
