The Casey Scorpions dropped from first position on the ladder straight out of the top two in one fell swoop following a thrilling one-point loss to Footscray today.
After Essendon’s tight victory over the Box Hill Hawks went a long way towards settling the top eight teams yesterday, Sunday’s Peter Jackson VFL action proved positions within the eight itself are far from settled.
Williamstown’s 38-point win against Coburg saw the Seagulls take Casey’s spot on the throne, while Collingwood’s 66-point triumph over Frankston also moved the Magpies ahead of the Scorpions into the top two.
In addition, victories to Port Melbourne (by 22 points over Sandringham) and the Bulldogs now has those teams knocking on the door of the top four in fifth and sixth places respectively.

FOOTSCRAY 12.12 (84) d CASEY SCORPIONS 13.5 (83)
Form: Footscray – W W L W W / Casey Scorpions – W L W W L
Telling facts: The Bulldogs scored a vital win in the context of their season in a match that swung on the strong wind blowing at VU Whitten Oval. Footscray kicked the only two goals against the breeze all day in the first quarter, which meant even a 30-point lead at the final break would be tough for Casey to defend. And so it proved in a tense finale, Anthony Barry putting the match-winning behind on the board with less than a minute remaining.
Leading goalkickers: Dale 4, Minson 2, Staley 2 (Footscray) / Smith 3, Newton 2 (Casey Scorpions)
COLLINGWOOD 22.11 (143) d FRANKSTON 12.5 (77)
Form: Collingwood – W W W W W / Frankston – L L L L L
Telling facts: Collingwood’s eighth straight victory was built on two enormous terms kicking with the wind at Frankston Oval. The Dolphins used the breeze to open up a 25-point lead by quarter time, but that advantage was quickly eroded as the Magpies piled on eight unanswered goals in the second stanza. Frankston then moved to within two points late in the third term before Collingwood stormed home with 11 majors in the last.
Leading goalkickers: Ferguson 4, Indovino 4, Broomhead 2, Oxley 2, Crocker 2, Gray 2, Wyatt 2 (Collingwood) / Gardiner 4, Cavarra 4 (Frankston)
PORT MELBOURNE 11.16 (82) d SANDRINGHAM 9.6 (60)
Form: Port Melbourne – W W W W W / Sandringham – W W W W L
Telling facts: Port Melbourne rode a barnstorming nine-goal first term at Trevor Barker Beach Oval to a fifth straight win. The Borough could only manage two majors after its early onslaught while kicking with the aid of a strong wind, but a hardy defensive effort limited Sandringham’s effectiveness in front of goal and ended the Zebras’ six-game winning streak.
Leading goalkickers: J.Tynan 2 (Port Melbourne) / Lonie 2 (Sandringham)
WILLIAMSTOWN 11.19 (85) d COBURG 7.5 (47)
Form: Williamstown – W L W W W / Coburg L W W L L
Telling facts: Williamstown secured top spot on the ladder after wearing down Coburg in the second half at Burbank Oval. The Lions started brightly to lead by 13 points at quarter time, but having edged in front at the main break, the Seagulls booted seven goals to three in the second half to prevail in a scrappy contest and make Coburg’s task of playing finals extremely difficult.
Leading goalkickers: Conway 3, Cordy 3, Owen 2, Siposs 2 (Williamstown) / Saad 3 (Coburg)
