With both teams sitting in the lower reaches of the Peter Jackson VFL top eight, Port Melbourne’s seven-point Round 13 win against Essendon was crucial in the context of both clubs’ seasons, as Wynstan Stats Central examines.
The Borough’s ability to win the ball inside the contests (nine more contested possessions and five more clearances for the match) allowed them to create a 28-point buffer at half time, but the Bombers responded with a vengeance.
Aaron Francis and Josh Freezer (a round-high 13 marks each) were part of an Essendon defence that set to work shutting down Port Melbourne’s forward thrusts after the long break. The Bombers had plenty of chances to make the Borough pay on the rebound, but could only manage an inaccurate 4.10 to 2.1 in the second half.
Sam Grimley (2.3) and first-gamer Victor Carboni (1.2) were among those who missed chances to overrun Port and translate the back line’s good work onto the scoreboard.
In other key stats from Round 13:
56: Williamstown ruckman Nick Meese has been preying on his opponents all season and last week’s match-up with North Ballarat pair Matt Eagles and Rowan Marshall was no exception. 197cm Meese had 56 hitouts to Eagles’ 18 and Marshall’s eight, and set up the Seagulls’ +6 advantage in clearances en route to victory. He’s also the VFL’s clear leader for total hitouts in 2016, 65 ahead of Frankston’s Michael Sikora.
78: Given third-placed Sandringham is over 26 percentage points behind top two teams the Casey Scorpions and Williamstown on the ladder, the Zebras would have been hoping to inflict more damage on Frankston than they did last week. Sandy recorded 78 inside-50s – an incredible 49 more than the Dolphins – but ‘only’ won by 60 points due to kicking an inaccurate 16.20.
