Seymour youngster Jake O’Brien has had big shoes to fill this season following the departure of one of the club’s greatest goal-kickers in Saad Saad this year.
Add the departure of some of other key forwards including Tom Bongetti and job was well truly ahead of the former Assumption College junior.
But he has taken every opportunity given to him after making his debut at Deakin Reserve against Shepparton United early in the season.
He has booted 14 goals from his nine games.
The 18-year-old first year university student says he owes a lot of his success to Brownlow Medallist Scott Wynd who was his coach while at Assumption College.
After graduating from Romsey Junior Football Club, he moved to Assumption College where he played in a number of school-based games.
It was his friendship with other Seymour players at the college that lead him to make the trip south down the highway to join the Lions.
In 2014 and 2015, he played at the Lions during school holidays or when his school team had the bye.
He says he is really relishing the opportunity to play with the likes of Ben Clifton and Jason Cole along with some of the club’s other experienced players.
“Brent has been really good to me and he really gets around the youngsters telling them what they are doing well and where they can improve,” he said.
After two pre-seasons with the Calder Cannons, O’Brien would love to play for the Goulburn Valley Football League after missing out this year because of injury.
