The McDonald’s SA Under-18 team has had five players selected in the 2016 AFL U18 All-Australian team, including captain Jack Graham.
North Adelaide’s Graham, who claimed the Larke Medal as the best Division One player, was named in the midfield while his deputy – Glenelg’s Jonty Scharenberg – gained a berth on the interchange bench after a solid carnival in the midfield.
Three Croweaters – Glenelg’s Sam Walker, Eagle Brennan Cox and Norwood’s Alex Villis – formed half of the back six in defence.
Walker and Villis provided great drive when they earned the football while Cox was resolute playing chiefly at centre-half back for the McDonald’s SA Under-18 team.
The McDonald’s SA Under-18 team finished second at the AFL National Championships after Victoria Metro defeated Western Australia on Wednesday.
Finishing with a 3-1 win-loss record, the Croweaters needed the Sandgropers to upset the previously unbeaten Victorians by less than six goals to claim the crown.
But WA failed to uphold its end of the bargain, succumbing to Victoria Metro by 23 points at Simonds Stadium in Geelong in their last match of the campaign.
South Australia’s three victories were earned against the Allies (44 points), Western Australia (37 points) and Victoria Country (11 points). Its only loss came after coughing up a 35-point three-quarter time lead to Victoria Metro, eventually succumbing by three points.
