Gippsland Galaxy was back on home soil over the weekend and kicked off the second half of the season with a win against Fitzroy at Traralgon Recreation Reserve.
Coming off the Queen’s Birthday weekend bye, both clubs were eager to apply early scoreboard pressure, but it was the visitors who struck the first blow kicking the first goal of the game inside five minutes.
The Galaxy, hit back with majors of their own through Emily Jolly, Rachel Drenen and Fiona Morrow to wrestle back the ascendency and go into quarter-time with a 14-point lead.
In what was to be a back and fourth tussle for the final three quarters, Fitzroy was able to match Gippsland’s Intensity and attack on the ball but was unable to translate it on the scoreboard, eventually going down 7.13(55) to 3.7(25).
Galaxy coach Nikki Schroeter was happy with the overall effort of the team but admitted Gippsland needed to improve on a few aspects heading into the back half of the season.
"I was really impressed with the two youth girls (Ashley Jans from Maffra and Demi Plunkett from Traralgon) who stepped up and provided solid efforts as well as our forward line which got a bit crowded at some stages," Schroeter said.
“We need to work on a few aspects of our game including structures and fitness but overall a win is a win and we were able to come away with the four points.”
Better players for the Galaxy included Drenen, Emily Jolly, Kate French, Shani Dixon, Kim Cunico and Natash Tile, while goals were shared between Drenen, Morrow, Emily Jolly, Sarah Jolly, French, Jans and Lisa Whittaker.
The Galaxy now sits atop of the premiership standings after eight rounds with an impressive percentage of 853, two games clear of arch rival Ajax and three ahead of St Kevin’s.
With six rounds remaining in the 2016 season, Gippsland heads away for two more games before returning home to Traralgon for the remaining three games of the season.
