Frankston will be ruing the 30 minutes that cost them a third win for 2016 against Footscray at Frankston Oval on the weekend, as Wynstan Stats Central examines.
The Dolphins outscored the Bulldogs in each of the first three quarters, pressuring their opponents relentlessly and kicking efficiently in front of goal (13.3 by full time) to establish a 36-point lead early in the final term.
But Footscray won all the key moments from that point, piling on eight goals to one to storm to an unlikely 10-point triumph.
Frankston harassed the Bulldogs with 114 tackles (a +26 advantage), effectively matched them in contested possessions and clearances, and flicked the ball around to create easy scoring opportunities inside 50 – recording wins of 47 in the handball receives count and +40 in the uncontested possession count.
But sometimes stats just can’t capture game-changing moments.
Bailey Dale started Footscray’s goal feast with a classy major on the run, before Will Hayes nailed a set shot and Joel Hamling plucked a contested mark in the goal square. A roving goal from Shaun Wyatt, another big mark from Mitch Hannan and a soccer off the ground all resulted in further goals, before best-on-ground Lukas Webb nailed one from long range at the 27-minute mark.
Suddenly – in defiance of most of the stats – the Dogs were in front.
In other key stats from Round 11:
12: Defender Tom Stewart was a constant thorn in Box Hill’s side during Geelong’s defeat of the Hawks, recording a round-high 12 marks. Some of the 190cm 23-year-old’s grabs came at the end of opposition forward forays, while others came as the Cats controlled the ball in their back line while waiting for attacking opportunities to arise. Fellow defenders Ryan Gardner (10 marks) and Jed Bews (seven) played similar roles.
