VFL Sunday recap: Round 11

A remarkable final-quarter comeback victory by Footscray headlined Sunday’s Peter Jackson VFL action while Geelong also returned to the winners’ list.

The Bulldogs trailed Frankston by 36 points early in the last term against Frankston, but produced a stunning goal blitz to overrun the Dolphins by 10 points and move into the top four.

The Cats, meanwhile, snapped a two-game losing run with a comprehensive 49-point win against the Box Hill Hawks, who have now lost four or their last five games in an uncharacteristic form slump.

Telling facts: Footscray broke Frankston hearts with a remarkable final-quarter comeback at Frankston Oval. The Dolphins had built on their sizeable lead in each of the first three terms and then booted the opening goal of the final stanza to extend the margin to 36 points. The Bulldogs, however, proceeded to pile on eight of the next nine goals – including the go-ahead major from Lukas Webb at the 27-minute mark – to snatch an unlikely victory.

After an even first quarter, the Cats broke away with six goals to two in the second term and continued shutting down the slick ball movement of last year’s grand finallists throughout the second half. The triumph was Geelong’s fourth of 2016, while the Hawks have now lost four of their last five games.
